Although "sustainability" is a fairly new term, the basic concept has been part of Acme Brick Company since its founding. Since 1891, we have built and operated our brick plants close to population centers. Today our network is 26 plants strong - and meets LEED's "local production" criterion of 500 miles' distance for nearly all of the central and southeastern United States. Acme people work hard to be good stewards of the environment. Our brick are made from quality earth clays and fired with clean natural gas in highly efficient, computer-controlled kilns. Two Alabama plants use methane from landfills. We also recycle material such as scrap clay and sawdust, incorporating them into the body of our brick. These efforts keep waste out of landfills and may help boost LEED scores. Our stewardship continues even after production ends. Through our industry-recognized reclamation programs, we have planted hundreds of thousands of trees at inactive production sites and created wetlands that offer attractive habitat for wildlife.

Cork is an eminently renewable resource harvested from the living bark of the Cork Oak. The properties of cork are derived naturally from the structure and chemical composition of the inner cells. Each cubic centimeter of cork’s honeycomb structure contains between 30 and 40 million polyhedral (14 sided) cells (over 100 million cells per cubic inch). Cork is harvested in a steady cycle that promotes healthy growth to the tree over its expected lifespan of over 200 years. Though the Cork Oak "Quercus suber" can flourish in many climates, the conditions that favor commercial use lie in a fairly narrow swath that cuts through Western Europe and Northern Africa along the Mediterranean coast.

Ametco powder coating process is solvent free. The powder is formulated using finley ground pigments and resins with zero solvents resulting in a clean air finish and next to zero VOCs. The electrostatic powder to substrate process equates to very little overspray, of which 98% can be retrieved and reused. This would qualify for LEED points only if it is used indoors. Ametco is continuing to work on improving their product line. These changes may increase the LEED points your project can earn.
Amvic Insulated Concrete Forms (ICF) is an excellent green building alternative. The polypropylene webs are placed 6” vs. 8” o/c, allowing most cut-off pieces to be re-used which can result in less than 1% construction waste compared to 6%. The webs are also manufactured using 100% recycled polypropylene making the product over 60% recycled material by weight. Amvic ICF structures also require 30-50% less energy to heat and cool, improve indoor air quality and require less maintenance over time. In addition, Amvic recently conducted an industry leading third party LEED Product Assessment which proved that using Amvic ICF can result in up to 28 points!

An important aspect of Securing What Matters is being environmentally responsible in the products they manufacture, and the processes they use in production. The steel they use in their production originates from "Basic Oxygen Furnace" (BOF) mills and "Electric Arc Furnace" (EAF) mills, both of which incorporate recycled raw material. Watching specific elements of how unique agricultural products perform in nature, Envirobond's research focused on developing a product line that was green in function and form. By mixing a powdered plant glue with crushed aggregate, Envirobond was initially created as an alternative to Asphalt for trails and pathways. This trailway product, when activated by water, hardened up and provided erosion resistance against washouts. Shortly after the success of the trailway product, it was noticed that contractors began using it as ajoint filler for large natural stone joints, such as flagstone. The ISO Clip provides a thermally broken and intermittent structural attachment for cladding systems to exterior wall assemblies. The clip is fabricated from Z-275 galvanized steel, and over-molded with a plastic isolator. Both horizontal and vertical steel girts can be attached to the ISO Clip, as shown below in Figures 1 & 2. The horizontal flange of the clip has a punched slot that allows the sub-girt to be adjusted and fastened to the clip. The plastic isolator between the metal clip and the wall provides a thermal break that reduces thermal bridging. For steel stud assemblies, the clips are fastened through the exterior sheathing directly to the steel studs using self-drilling screws.
