The City of Cleveland has been planning for years to renovate part of their downtown area to include a greener space. The decision was made to create a walker friendly area for pedestrian enjoyment in the Public Square. The large project included the closing of streets to traffic, major deconstruction, and several changes to present a more environmentally friendly downtown all in time for the Republican National Convention to be held in Cleveland in 2016. When finished, the space will boast walking paths, fountains, a cafe, and an event lawn for concerts or afternoon picnics.

With all of the construction that occurs in a populated area there is a significant amount of impermeable surface area. The rainwater that washes over the pavement drains to pipes underneath. As a new feature to the Public Square, the Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District (NEORSD) provided funds for Osborn Engineering Co. to include a rainwater harvesting system. This system cleans, stores and reuses some of the runoff water from the downtown area.
After the water is drained beneath the surface, it is pretreated with a Contech CDS hydrodynamic separator. The CDS unit removes debris and sediment that may damage or clog downstream pumps, filters, and fixtures. It also lowers cleaning and maintenance costs by keeping pollutants out of the cistern and mechanical system.

After pretreatment, the water is stored in a DuroMaxx Steel Reinforced Polyethylene (SRPE) cistern custom designed for the  tight site constraints. DuroMaxx is an ideal choice for rainwater harvesting cisterns as the joints can be made watertight.

Buoyancy was a concern, so tiedown straps were used to anchor the cisterns to concrete deadman to prevent flotation. The stored water is then pumped into a StormFilter system with a manhole configuration where it is filtered by a series of media based cartridges. The StormFilter was used to make the water feature more aesthetic by further cleaning the water, and to prevent the pump from clogging. The water then proceeds to another DuroMaxx cistern before the end use of public fountains in the square. For overflow situations, the water is passed into a perforated CMP detention system allowing it to infiltrate back into the groundwater.

For this project, beautification through the use of fountains also helps the environment. Reusing water is a fantastic way to recycle the resource. Contech was key in providing this innovative solution. The design assistance, drawings, and installation guidance proved to make a successful and on time rehabilitation.
