Every project has its hurdles and problems to overcome. Sometimes it’s weather, sometimes it’s the location, while other times it’s equipment problems or resources. An experienced and well trained contractor can overcome job-site problems and is why Hacker Industries, Inc., only uses licensed applicators to install their underlayment products.

To renovate the Wyndham’s Margaritaville Vacation Club on the island of St. Thomas, contractors had to overcome several hurdles, many of them logistical, as equipment, crews and materials all had to be shipped to the tiny Caribbean island.

The 2016 Margaritaville Vacation Club project was a renovation and addition for the 34-acre resort property. Phase I included the turnover of 70 renovated poolside and beachfront guest units, new design-build Margaritaville Restaurant, and check-in facility. Phase II included 194 renovated hillside guest rooms, a new Market Square retail area and Wyndham Vacation Ownership Sales Center.

Moss Construction Management oversaw the project and brought in Specialty Solutions, Inc. to handle installing the floor underlayments necessary for sound and fire resistance, floor to floor. Specialty Solutions owner, Bill Greene’s first challenge was getting all of his equipment, including pumps, hoses, trucks and crew from Florida to the island of St. Thomas, as well as enough FIRM-FILL® Gypsum Cement Underlayment to pour over 100,000 sq. ft.

“We had to ship everything. Loaded it all onto a boat,” Greene said. “It’s not like there’s construction equipment to rent on a resort island.”

Transporting all of Specialty Solutions equipment was the first hurdle. The second hurdle Greene and his crew had to overcome was issues with the sand they had access to on St. Thomas. The problem that was resulting was crumbling of the gypsum cement upon drying.

“We almost gave up after the first day, it was so bad,” remarked Greene. “But that’s not a real option, so we worked at it and worked at it and came up with a special aggregate solution that resulted in strengths of almost 4000psi.”

Able to stay on schedule, Specialty Solutions completed the job in 21 days. The end result was an exceptionally smooth, rock-solid floor surface ready for installation of finished floor coverings.

As a Licensed Applicator of Hacker Floor Underlayments, Specialty Solutions has the training and experience to overcome tough obstacles to keep the job on schedule and done right the first time. Specialty Solutions was founded in 2007 and has multiple crews of highly trained installation technicians working around the clock and around the world.
