With almost $2 billion on the line, a modern airport needed modern recycling and trash receptacles.

When ordinary wouldn’t do for this modern airport, the project's designers selected DeepStream’s modern trash and recycling bins to integrate recycling into the Intermodal Terminal in support of the Orlando Aviation Authority’s continued focus on Sustainability.

Florida’s newest and most modern airport will also be its most bold and dynamic in the spirit of Orlando, home to world class theme parks. Modern trash and recycling receptacles by DeepStream have also been chosen for Orlando International Airport’s new South Terminal.

Designers specified DeepStream’s modern Audubon combination recycling receptacle and trash receptacles with 3form Varia Thatch resin panels. 3form makes an almost unlimited pallet of textures, colors, and materials to combine into unique decorative panels that wipe clean. The Varia Thatch that designers chose uses natural thatch set into clear and colored resin panels.

“The design goal for the South Terminal Complex is to create the next generation of The Orlando Experience™ by using large gestures that will create an unforgettable experience,” according to Fentress Architects.

Currently under construction and scheduled to open in 2021, the South Terminal will be a decidedly modern airport. The $1.8-billion project includes a world class terminal building, ticketing, security, and 16 gates. The terminal’s 1,000-foot long boulevard features an innovative skylight that diffuses natural light throughout the space.

Several civic spaces along the boulevard enhance the passenger experience by providing comfortable seating, shopping, and a new state-of-the-art media experience. The project also has several indoor and outdoor courtyards with plants and trees creating a more sustainable terminal building.

SchenkelShultz was responsible for the programming and master planning which connected the existing airport’s four terminals with the new South Terminal by trains through the central Intermodal Terminal facility, also the starting point for future high speed Virgin Rail to Miami. The Intermodal Terminal was completed in 2017, and is already fitted out with many of DeepStream’s receptacles on casters for mobility.

As the first stage of the new South Airport Complex, the 500,000 square foot Intermodal facility consists of a dual-platform, 4-track passenger rail system, an automated people mover (APM) connecting the South Airport Complex with the existing North Terminal Complex, and accommodations to accept future commuter rail, and light rail modes.

Alongside the four rail types coming into this modern airport facility, a ground transportation component integrated into the building serves bus, taxi, limo and public transit modes, as well as a public drop-off curb for passengers.

Walter P Moore, an international company of engineers and architects, was responsible for The Intermodal Terminal Facility parking and connectivity via SkyBridge and people mover to a new 2,400 car garage, with designed expansion capability of reaching 5,000 cars to serve the future South Terminal Complex.

Replaceable captured panels slip into the legs and are joined by an open aluminum frame to hold the rugged leakproof recycled plastic inner bins. The open inner support frame leaves no place for waste or pests to hide. The frame also acts as a rugged base to attach casters for mobility.

Audubon Modern Trash and Recycling Bin lids are sanitary "no-touch" 16-gauge 316 stainless steel that will handle millions of touches a year and never wear out. They are easily cleaned and refinished. All parts are replaceable at manufacturer’s direct cost, and we back each receptacle with a Lifetime Structural Warranty. Since its inception, DeepStream has planted 100 trees for every bin purchased through an excellent program run by Trees for the Future. The order for Orlando’s modern airport Intermodal Terminal alone planted a respectable forest grove of 4,600 trees. These trees will help absorb carbon, give off oxygen, and cool the earth, while providing employment and food for the participants in this grassroots environmental program.
